A reply in a chat scrolls away, and an artifact stays where you can find it and keep working on it. An artifact is anything Claude makes that you would put in front of someone: a document, a deck, a design, a small tool. It opens beside the chat in its own panel. You can type into it directly or ask Claude for a change and it updates in place, and everything you make is saved in the Artifacts tab, whatever chat it came from.
Ask for the same thing in a plain chat and the answer stays stuck in that thread. To change it, you copy and paste it into a new chat. To find it next month, you scroll back through old chats. So when the answer is something you will use again, ask Claude to make it an artifact, or start one from the Artifacts tab with Docs, Slides, Design or Dashboard.
The facts come from Anthropic’s help page on what artifacts are and how to use them, read on 14 October 2026, and from the Artifacts tab and a chat with an artifact open, as seen on 13 and 14 October 2026. The screens are generic copies of the real pages. Features change, so check the page for the current wording. This is an independent explainer, not affiliated with Anthropic.
