Sovereign AI is a country making sure it doesn't depend on a few foreign companies for its AI. What Britain is doing about it, why, and the catch that nobody builds it all alone.
By the UK government’s count, just five companies control 70 per cent of the world’s AI computing power. Sovereign AI is a country making sure it doesn’t depend on them for everything: its own computers, its own data and its own people. Britain launched a £500 million Sovereign AI Unit in April 2026 to back homegrown AI companies and give them time on national supercomputers, and the government’s stated reason is control over where AI is built, how it runs and who is ultimately in charge of it.
The catch is that no country builds it all alone. Isambard-AI, Britain’s national AI supercomputer, runs on more than five thousand NVIDIA chips, and of the 184 sovereign AI projects that one Washington research group tracks worldwide, NVIDIA supplies the chips for 45 per cent. So sovereign AI isn’t about going it alone. It’s deciding which parts a country must control itself.
Every claim was checked against the UK government’s own announcements, the University of Bristol’s Isambard-AI pages, NVIDIA’s public sector pages and the CNAS Sovereign AI Index, in October 2026. This is an independent explainer, not affiliated with any government or company.

By the UK government's count, just five companies control seventy per cent of the world's AI computing power. Sovereign AI is a country making sure it doesn't depend on them for everything.
NVIDIA, the chip maker, defines it as a nation producing AI with its own infrastructure, data, workforce and business networks. In plain terms, that means its own computers, its own data and its own people.
Britain launched a five hundred million pound Sovereign AI Unit in April twenty twenty six. It backs homegrown AI companies and gives them time on national supercomputers.
The government's reason is control, over where AI is built, how it runs and who is ultimately in charge of it.
The catch is that no country builds it all alone. Isambard-AI, Britain's national AI supercomputer, runs on more than five thousand NVIDIA chips. One research group in Washington tracks a hundred and eighty four sovereign AI projects worldwide, and nearly half of them run on NVIDIA chips.
Sovereign AI isn't about going it alone. It's deciding which parts a country must control itself.
